Women are fed up smashing their way through the glass ceiling and waiting for men to let them have top jobs. They are getting around the problem by setting up their own businesses in increasing numbers.
Research shows they consistently do well in awards ceremonies, impressing judges with their get up and go. Sahar Hashemi, Founder of Coffee Republic and Penny Newman of Cafe Direct are both inspirational women who prove that the glass ceiling can be melted given half the chance.
They were undaunted by the fact that more than thirty years since the Sex Discrimination Act came into force, women are still the underdog in the workplace generally.
Despite fantastic achievements by women such as Sahar and Penny, inspirational, groundbreaking women, are not reaching the top of their professions in significant numbers. They represent just 10% of directors at FTSE 100 companies, and barely 20% of Members of Parliament.
There have been strong calls by the Equal Opportunities Commission to change attitudes of managers and trainers who are preventing women making their mark in large enough numbers in top management positions. They are demanding the removal of barriers preventing women reaching positions of power.
"It is vital that policy makers ensure that we make the right choice if we are to see a future where women’s and men’s choices are supported, not penalised; where potential is fulfilled, not squandered and where greater control over our working time is widespread, rather than the exception," they say.
Nevertheless Cranfield Management School researchers were heartened that FTSE 100 companies are not as male dominated as they used to be but still only 11% of women hold directorships at the last count in 2006 compared to 5.9 % in 2000.
